Dharma Words for the 2025 Memorial Ceremony
in Honor of the Founding Abbot of Chung Tai Chan Monastery

Abbot Shi Jianying, April 8th, 2025

With one mind, we take refuge in the unsurpassed ones of the ten directions,
who have realized and completed perfect enlightenment
for themselves and others.

With one mind, we take refuge in the profound and fathomless Dharma treasury,
wherein, the non-duality of emptiness and existence
reveals the true reality.

With one mind, we take refuge in the virtuous and harmonious sangha,
who, mastering both principle and preaching,
bring liberation to countless beings.

Showing the sacred manifestations in King Suddhodana's palace,
Born upon golden lotuses blooming in Lumbini Garden,

夜睹明星悟正覺,鹿苑三轉正法輪;

Gazing at the night star, awakening to perfect awareness,
Turning the true Dharma wheel through three discourses at Deer Park.

Teaching for forty-nine years, yet not a word was spoken,
Manifesting nirvana beneath the twin shala trees.

The Dharma body abides throughout the ten directions,
With great compassion, guiding us out of the sea of delusion.

With one mind and utmost reverence,
we pay homage to the Founding Abbot of Chung Tai Chan Monastery, Grand Master Weichueh Zhi'an.

Upholding the Dharma lineage of Linji, the Founding Abbot carried forward the mind-lamp and wisdom-life of the patriarchs, founded Chung Tai Chan Monastery, and established a monastic organization suited to modern times. Across the globe, he built meditation centers to demonstrate the principle of mind and embody the teaching of Dharma, reaching sentient beings of diverse capacities. He established schools to nurture future generations, and with an unconditional vow, he liberated sentient beings wide and far.

Out of great compassion, the Founding Abbot enjoined us to "preserve the monastery, deepen cultivation, and spread the Dharma." As his disciples, we engrave these words upon our hearts. We vow to faithfully and diligently apply the Three Links of Cultivation in our daily practice: to deepen our cultivation through work-practice, Chan inquiry, meditation, and the study of Dharma; to spread the Dharma by fulfilling our duties, promoting Chan meditation, and embodying the principles of Buddhadharma; to preserve the monastery through shared responsibility and mutual cooperation, abiding in right mindfulness, and returning all dharmas to the one principle. Today, on the anniversary of the Founding Abbot's passing into nirvana, we gather together to recite the Mahayana sutras, and don the sacred robe to make offerings to the buddhas and partake in the formal meal. With utmost sincerity, we offer our pure body, speech, and mind in profound gratitude to the teacher.

We disciples vow to carry forward the teacher's great resolve, to broadly cultivate merit and virtue, to deepen our samadhi, and to discover true wisdom. Life after life, we vow to never regress in our bodhi mind. We vow to dedicate all the merits of our practice: May the true Dharma long remain in the world, may the nation and its people be peaceful and prosperous, may there be harmony in the world, and may all sentient beings reach the other shore. We shall never forget the Chung Tai Vow of Practice and to be a bodhisattva with the Chan mind. In the name of the teacher, we carry the Dharma in our hearts and live it through our actions.

On this day of the Memorial Ceremony in Honor of the Founding Abbot, what is the last verse?

中台祖意在當下,直下承擔絕有無;

The Founding Abbot's true message is in the here and now,
Take it up directly, transcending emptiness and existence;

With the Three Links imprinted in our hearts,
we carry on the teacher's vow,
Walking together on the path of awakening
and never forsaking our commitments.
